Vietnamese police have announced that they have arrested Phan Van Anh Vu, a fugitive real estate-related businessman who is wanted on charge of “deliberately revealing state secrets” after a failed attempt to seek passage to Germany via Singapore.
Vu was deported from Singapore for violating the Immigration Act, Vietnamese police said on their website Thursday.
“The Security Investigation Agency of the Ministry of Public Security received and arrested Phan Van Anh Vu and will investigate according to Vietnamese law,” said the notice.
Vietnamese police issued an arrest warrant for Vu on December 21 but he was not found at his residence in the central city of Da Nang, the economic hub in central Vietnam.
Vu is well known for being the owner of major real estate projects in the city and also alleged an intelligence agent of the Ministry of Public Security.
According to international media reports, a spokesperson for Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said Vu was arrested on Dec. 28 “for committing offences under the Immigration Act.”
Singapore has no extradition treaty with Vietnam, but its immigration authority has the power to repatriate people under certain circumstances, according to the country’s immigration law.
Vu had filed an application to German authorities to allow the embassy in Singapore issue him a visa allowing him to travel to Germany, media reported.
